Pender United Methodist Church
Pender United Methodist Church engaged LeMay Erickson Willcox to help evaluate and reimagine its sprawling, multi-winged campus to better suit the church’s evolving ministry needs. Developed in successive phases over the course of 50 years, the campus was determined to have “space,” but too often the wrong type of space in the wrong location. The existing Narthex in particular, while geographically the hub of the campus, was undersized and dimly lit to serve the greeting and gathering role of Pender’s active, vibrant ministry. LeMay Erickson Willcox’s design proposal relocates inadequate office areas to a new addition, allowing the existing Narthex to open-up and expand into a generously-inviting skylit gathering area. A cross mounted above a gas fireplace provides a welcome focal point in a room with many possibilities: Sunday gathering, weekday Bible study, even small weddings. An adjacent cafe with more durable finishes serves as the social hub for snacks and coffee on Sunday mornings and throughout the week.
