Burke Volunteer Fire Station No. 14

LeMay Erickson Willcox Architects responded on a fast track basis to an unexpected tragedy when the existing Burke Fire Station burned in January 1997. The new 27,500 s.f. fire station provides four drive-through apparatus bays, support facilities for the bays, offices for career and volunteer staff, classroom, lounge, kitchen/ dining, and sleeping facilities (16 bunks for men, 8 for women and 4 unisex bunks). An open air outdoor courtyard at the center of the building allows daylight into the central areas of the building. The Volunteer Fire Department also incorporated a large community meeting hall for 250 people served by a separate public entrance, handicap accessible toilets and a commercial kitchen.

The site design was complicated by an existing underground oil plume, a flood plane that occupied half of the property, the need
to maintain a broadcast monopole located on the site throughout the design and construction process, and various limiting setbacks and property lines.
