Lorton Volunteer Fire Station

Lorton Volunteer Fire station is a new 23,000 sf fire station that will replace an existing 16,000 sf station. The program will include four drive-thru bays, a community hall, offices, and living quarters.

The station will incorporate a variety of training features both within the building and on the site including a dual-purpose tower for hose drying and training with ladder training, and bailout window. In addition, a vehicle extrication training pad is provided with a standard guardrail, Jersey barrier, a six-foot tall, 18” diameter post, and controllable lighting fixtures used to simulate real life scenarios at various times of the day. The design of the extrication pad includes specialized drainage to capture any fuels or oils spilled during training exercises and is located away from the apron in an effort to minimize the amount of broken glass or other remnants of training exercises that impact the daily operation of the station.

The facility is targeting LEED Silver Certification. Sustainable design strategies include site selection, water use reduction, construction waste management, recycled content and regional materials.
