Aldie Fire Station

Aldie Fire Station #7 will be located in rural Virginia near the historic towns of Aldie and Middleburg and will replace a smaller existing volunteer fire station built in 1971 which has been subject to flooding. The new 15,000 s.f. fire station will be constructed on a new site and will include 16 bunks, living and dining accommodations, 4 drive-thru apparatus bays, administrative offices, a physical training room, a training classroom, and a dual-purpose tower for hose drying and training. The dayroom, dining room, and kitchen have been organized as a central “great room” that provides a direct response path to the apparatus bays. The great room includes an exterior glass wall that opens the space to a covered patio with a grill and low privacy screen wall.

The design character of the building draws inspiration from the vernacular language of the rolling countryside and surrounding farmlands of “Virginia horse country”. Long stone walls capture the spirit of stone walled country lanes, while the use of horizontal siding, gable roofs with standing seam metal roofing, and simple building masses recall the barns and farmhouses dotting the landscape.

The building is targeting a LEED Silver Certification. Sustainable design strategies include the use of geothermal HVAC, photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting, regional materials, recycled content materials, pervious pavement, high solar- reflectance roofing materials, and low VOC interior finishes.
